In Jérémie an ancient temple was destroyed in a fire that occurred in 1874. In 1877 it was decided to rebuild a parish church. In 1879, a credit of 30,000 gourdes passed by the House of Representatives allowed support its reconstruction. The works came to an end in 1901. The church was dedicated to St. Louis King of France (also known as Louis IX of France and Ludovico). On April 20, 1972, the Diocese of Jérémie was created with the division of the diocese of Les Cayes. That is when Jérémie church became a cathedral. wikipedia

Residents of Jérémie filled St Louis Church and lined up the streets to pay their respect to their beloved businessman and philanthropist Mr Jean Brunel Pierre." it's not so much the disappearance of the businessman who was Brunel Pierre which upsets the city, It is rather for many families, the loss of a philanthropist who believed above all the virtues of a good education that he had not been able to afford " Yvon Janvier / Le Nouvelliste - Rode Pierre, daughter of Jean Brunel.

He's the father of prominent writer Alexandre Dumas (The Three Musketeers) and grand father of Alexandre Dumas' son (The Lady with the Camellias)

Because of its geographical isolation and the weakness of economic activities, The historic center in Jeremie has been relatively preserved, even though several buildings are currently underutilized and poorly maintained. And some of them have been completely abandoned.

I haven't set foot in the Grand'Anse in 3 years and exactly 4 months. Jeremie was severely hit by hurricane Matthew in 2016, the storm took away almost all the houses in sheet metal roofing. Only the concrete buildings resisted the repeated attacks of the hurricane. Jeremie has now partially recovered, but even before the storm, Jeremie and the Grand'Anse Department had an urgent need for a massive investment in infrastructure and most important to invest in human capital and long-term business development.

Voodoo celebration in Souvenance begins on Good Friday and continues for a week. Every year hundreds of people assemble in this tiny village. It is one of the holiest pilgrimages for believers in voodoo. Souvenance is located between Gonaïves and Cap-Haïtien, about 20km north of Gonaïves.Voodoo was brought to Haiti by slaves from West Africa but did not become a recognized religion by the Caribbean country until the 1960s.
