Looking at pleasant photographs can provide some type of mental escape during times of moderate stress Port Au Prince residents are currently experiencing. In addition to reminiscing unforgettable locations, I’ve been to throughout  Haiti. I’m getting anxious to be on the road again.

A higher standard of education for all is key to further the development of citizens and the transformation of Haitian society. A little girl in uniform on her way to school in Jérémie, two and half months before a strong earthquake of 7.2 M hit the South of Haiti on August 14, 2021.

The Gingerbread Houses of Haiti

In October 2009, the Gingerbread Houses of Haiti were included on the 2010 World Monuments Watch, to raise international awareness about this unique architectural heritage. Many of these once elegant, turn-of-the-century structures, detailed with fretted wood and intricate latticework, had fallen into disrepair. While political instability and economic strife had precluded substantive preservation ef- forts in recent decades, the Haitian Leadership and Education Program (HELP) brought the Gingerbread Houses to the attention of the World Monuments Fund (WMF), in the hopes of generating support for the revitalization of these important buildings and communities. Kind of feel like I’ve been living in a different era since I got off the bus and been hanging out at the historical center in downtown Jérémie.

Makeover

One of the old, imported houses on Rue Sténio Vincent in downtown Jérémie is getting a makeover. Pastel blue and yellow are a great combination, most shades of blue are considered calming because of their likeness to the sky and the ocean.

Architectural Heritage of the City of Jeremie

“The architectural heritage of the city of Jérémie constitutes an invaluable wealth. The preservation and enhancement of the architectural heritage of the city of Jérémie can only find their true dimensions if they are supported by the population itself from the initiative and under the coordination of local and regional authorities. ”Angie Joseph / ISPAN Author. photo © patrice dougé All rights reserved

In addition to its architectural wealth, the historical heritage of the city of Jérémie, it’s a relatively safe environment with peaceful and welcoming communities throughout the Grand’Anse.

As I walked along its narrow streets in the downtown area, you can feel its history. The streets are lined with French colonial buildings; some imported from Europe, built way back then when Jeremie was a prosperous picturesque province.
